The Paralympics is a wonderful institution and has showcased
some incredibly courageous and determined people who have shown what you can do
even if the odds are very much against you.
The opening ceremony was remarkable and letting Stephen Hawking loose on
the audience as a key figure encouraging people to look beyond and try to
understand how the universe operates was a brilliant stroke, since he is so
well known and possibly the most famous disabled person in the world.
However, it is my hope that in the future there will be no
more Paralympics. If we are able to
follow up on Stephen Hawking’s philosophy and we are able to promote and
develop science, then eventually medicine will advance to the point where disabilities
of any kind, congenital or due to an injury, will all be curable or
preventable. When that happy state
occurs, then the Paralympics will be redundant and only the Olympics will
remain.
That's a great hope, snafu - what a wonderful world that would be!
